Virus & Worm Prevention & Precautions
With the recent release of two widely distributed and damaging virus threats it has become even more imperative that Windows users become familiar with the basics of keeping their systems clean and up-to-date. The presence of an antivirus solution is no longer a precaution, but a necessity. The most basic tasks required to keep your system running smoothly are 1) applying the Microsoft critical security patches as they become available and 2) keeping your antivirus program updated and running. Outlined below are some simple steps to keep your system running smoothly in an environment with an increased need for security.

Windows Update:
All recent versions of Windows include an automatic update feature. In Windows 9x (98 and ME), it requires and initial download available from
Windows Update and is called Windows Critical Update Notification Utility. This utility is designed to keep you notified when new updates are available and can be set to update your system automatically anytime you are online.

To manually update Windows, simply open Internet Explorer, click the Tools tab, and select Windows Update. This will scan your computer for updates you have already installed and offer you the latest patches. It is recommended you run this scan multiples times, as some updates cannot be installed simultaneously.

Antivirus Updates:
Most antivirus programs have an auto-update feature that will download the latest virus definition updates when you are connected to the internet. It is important to make sure that you are subscribed and are receiving these updates on a regular basis.
